Flux
"Ask yourself am I moving forward, or am I just a hunk of dry bones lying on the ground waiting for life to come?"
Flux is a surf film with a difference. From the outset, director Andrew Carruthers wanted to avoid the standard Christian surf film that seemed to glorify being a Christian; in that if you follow Jesus you will get perfect waves and 10 second barrels.
In Flux, he wanted to ask why surfers follow Jesus.
After four years of planning Andrew assembled an Oceans 11 team of long-boarders and film makers. Spanning 12 to 60 years old, each from different walks of life and at different stages in their faith. As the 14 members of the Flux crew converged on the North Island of New Zealand from their respective parts of Australia, the weather was looking extremely promising for the 11 day shoot.
The concept was a narrative documentary film, intercut with surfing and music representing the different stages of Jesus' seven "I am" statements. As Andrew states "Jesus describes himself by his nature and character as the unique son of God. As we study these seven statements and discuss how the words spoken in the 1st century relate to us in the 21st century, we will rediscover Jesus." With the adaptability of the crew and main surfing locations being weather dependant, the emphasis on surfing sometimes overtook the accompanying project of capturing conversation.
Throughout the 11 day shoot, the team were rewarded with the best weather of the winter, and a myriad of waves to show the true diversity of long-boarding.
With the film in the initial editing stages, the following photo series documents the people and events during production.
Flux is scheduled for winter 2011 release.
