Forest Foraging : Danny & Olive
In a time when most kids are chained to an iPad or computer it was refreshing to hear about Danny and Olive’s latest camping trip. I’ve known Danny for about 30 years, we grew up together before we moved away and lost touch for the last 20 years. What drew me to their story was the fact that Olive has been brought up with the fascination of being outside, not only for foraging but the simple reason of how it feels to be away from technology, bare feet on the earth. She jokes with her cousins who are a few years older than her that if the world ends tomorrow she’ll be fine as she knows how to find her own food, and they won’t know where to start. Her classmates are usually on their phones during lunchtime, but she’s on the cricket pitch finding bugs and different flowers.
Danny’s life has taken a pretty big left turn when he lost his hearing. I always knew he was hard of hearing, but along the way he lost 100% and had to adapt to a life inside his own head. It wasn’t until some 3 months later the chance of the implants was offered and he would be able to regain connection to the outside world. In that time he found himself drawn into nature more than ever before, saying "nature doesn’t demand anything from us" and he can connect at will, even without hearing.
